Is there car parking service?

A

We don’t have facilities for car or bicycle parking. Please use nearby parking services for example “Times Parking”, or public transportation recommended.

When is the best season to see the flowers?

A

In Engakuji you can enjoy flowers in each season, though flowering time is different year by year. Your heart may be shaken with alive nature if only you see and listen to them with an open and calm mind. Typical season is from late Mar to early Apr for cherry blossoms, Jun for hydrangea, and Nov for autumn leaves.

How many kinds of Goshuin are there?

A

In ENGAKUJI there are three desks, one is next to temple’s general reception, in BENTENDO nearby National Treasure GRAND BELL, and the other is In BUTSUNICHI-AN temple, whose kinds of written characters are different each other. It may take some time at each desk in top season.

Pets are allowed to be accompanied?

A

Small Pets are not prohibited exclusively outdoors in ENGAKUJI, however you are expected the manners and attentive cooperation with others who may feel fears of animals.

Are there places for eating for e.g. lunch box, bento, snacks and so on.

A

Eating is possible only in Rest House next to the souvenir shop and BENTEN-CHAYA(Tea House) . Alcohol and smoking are strictly prohibited.

Prayer Meeting by monks can be asked for?

A

Prayer Meeting prepared on demand is inquired of conditions at administration office, only in Japanese.

Zazen session can be joined?

A

Some Zazen practice meetings held in mainly weekends and every morning are open for anybody including beginners without a reservation, however they are guided in Japanese and intended for individuals (not for group tours). If you are a group of 4-5 or more, please ask our administration office by e-mail (engaku@engakuji.or.jp) in advance with plenty of time.

Are sessions of a hand-copying of a Sutra open for non-Buddhist.

A

Any individuals can join sessions without reservation for a hand-copying of a Sutra whose schedule should be checked in page of “ZEN PRATICE & TRANSCRIBING SUTRA” , only in Japanese.

Are taking photographs or movies allowed?

A

Although private photo or movie taking are not prohibited except cases with “No Photo” , please keep sincere manners not to take photos of clergymen or monks without each permission. If for commercial purposes, you should ask our administration office for permission in advance.

Alcohol and smoking are strictly prohibited.

Are sketching or painting allowed?

A

Sketching or Painting are unfortunately prohibited due to many past cases of bad manners.
