The Best is Yet to Be

Wind rustling the summer leaves,

The best is yet to be,

Now is the crucial moment for you.

Birds twittering and chirping here and there,

The best is yet to be,

Now is the crucial moment for you.

The tide rising and flowing in,

The best is yet to be,

Now is the crucial moment for you.

Reeds putting forth shoots,

The best is yet to be,

Now is the crucial moment for you.

The rest of my life,

The best is yet to be and be seen.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

A Piece of Advice from a Red Bird

Oh, Shinmin. You, who be of the common run of man,

should carry on living as you are,

even though you could not yet achieve the spiritual enlightenment you wish for.

But you should know that this is the very process through which

you were bestowed with compassionate mercy.

Go on, living as you have been.

Since you only live once,

carry on living in pursuit of one and only one thing at a time,

wholeheartedly and with full concentration.

Make your flowers bloom and each of them bear fruit,

turning your own dreams into reality.

Read good books.

Cultivate yourself by putting your nose in good works.

Burn a brilliant fire in your heart

and call out at the end of your life—

in your final breath—

that your existence was one of great dignity.

The Heartfelt Taste of Rice Balls,

Each Gifted from Three Different People in Token of Their Sympathy to Me

―A poem composed on a day I am sick in bed

It was at that time when

their true heart was conveyed to me

in a peaceable and amiable way,

coming directly to me,

rolling over and over sweetly to me.

I was filled with a warm emotion,

aroused by an affinity bound to a strange fate.

Even now I still remember

the heartfelt taste of those rice balls.

―English translation: SAKAI Takahiko

Rainfall on an Autumn Day

In the rainfall, insects make musical sounds aloud

with single-minded concentration and detachment.

Ah, how absorbed they are in singing so distinctly and clearly,

reminding me of what I have begun to lose.

意義と息

Meaning as Seen in Breathing

すべて

長く続けることに

意義がある

In a general sense,

there is meaning in

doing things for a long time.

息でもそうだ

長い息が

長生きにつながるのだ

This is true for breathing too.

Long breaths will lead to a long life.

Immeasurable Depths

There is no limit to the depth of my search for truth.

That is why there is no goal to fulfill my devotion.

Seeking truth is endless.

Devotion upon devotion has no end.

All life on Earth lives and lets live,

surrounded with a deep affection

bestowed by something invisibly great.

It is the joining of your hands

in appreciation of knowing this miraculous benevolence

that will, if only just a little, reduce the misery and cruelty

born of reciprocal hatred and killing.
